Korea Rental Car Scams, (1) Contract-Related Issues

Renting a car is essential for independent travel, but when traveling in any country, unforeseen circumstances can arise if precautions aren’t taken in advance. I want to highlight some common scams that foreigners may encounter when renting cars in Korea. These scams aren’t limited to foreigners; even locals can become victim. Therefore, it’s crucial, especially for non-Korean speakers, to be extra cautious.

Where do they usually occur?

  • The areas where consumers experience the most car rental problems are Jeju (40-50%), Seoul (30-40%), and Gyeonggi (9-10%).
  • As these are popular destinations, travelers visiting Korea are likely to face rental issues there, requiring extra attention.

Contract Issues (Vehicle Changes and Extra Charges upon Return):

  • Foreigner Mr. Lu planned a trip to Korea and reserved a rental car. However, upon arrival to pick up the vehicle, he was told that the reserved car wasn’t available, and he was given a different one instead. Although Mr. Lu wanted to review the contract, the staff rushed him into signing without fully inspecting the filled-in sections. During the trip, there were no issues, but upon returning the car, he was billed more than the reserved price. When Mr. Lu inquired about the contract, the company insisted on the charges based on the signed agreement. Only after returning the vehicle could Mr. Lu review the contract and understand the reason for the extra charges. Mr. Lu underscores the importance of thoroughly reviewing contracts before signing.
  • I hope that before coming to Korea, you’ll research and visit the rental car company to understand the detailed terms and conditions in advance. Even if the rental car employee pressures you, I recommend thoroughly reading the contract on-site.

 

Contract Issues (Refusal to Refund Deposits and Contract Breach):

  • Foreigner Mr. Don reserved and paid a deposit for a rental car in Korea. However, on the reserved date, the rental company didn’t provide the booked vehicle, claiming it had been given to another customer. Despite Don’s request for a deposit refund, the company refused, citing their contract terms. This situation left Don without a rental car and unable to retrieve the deposit. While legal action is an option, it’s crucial to review contract terms beforehand to prevent such situations. These examples illustrate the potential pitfalls of car rentals in Korea.
